چکیده

Contamination of the environment in Kuwait occurred in 1990-1991 during the Iraqi invasion and due to explosion of more than 700 oil wells. Oil contamination caused serious damage to the environment. This study was conducted to estimate the extent and volume of contaminated soil by using remote sensing, GIS application and field survey.. A map of the area was developed by GIS showing four types of oil contaminations these are: liquid oil, oily soil, tarmat and soot plus a clean soil type, where no oil contamination was observed. Based on the three damage categories the volume of contaminated soil was estimated at about 24.4 million cubic meters. The bulk of the oilcontaminated soil occurs in the dry oil lake areas (70%) and the oil lake areas (24%), and oily soil is the dominant type of contaminated soil layer. The application of remote sensing and GIS technology provided a tool to estimate the extent of environmental damages due to large scale oil pollution.

Survey of Technology for Remediation of Oil-Contaminated Soil in Kuwait

Millions of barrels of crude oil gushed freely from these wells, creating oil lakes in low-lying areas of the desert. Lakes were formed at more than 500 different locations, covering a total area initially estimated at 49 km. While the Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has recovered 22.5 million barrels of the spilled crude; the remaining amount, is considered unrecoverable by standard methods. An estim...

Physiological responses and phytoremediation ability of Eastern Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) for crude oil contaminated soil

One of the most important anthropogenic pollution types in countries with oil production is soil and water contamination by petroleum. Phytoremediation is an emerging green technology for cleaning up polluted soil. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to study the effect of oil-contaminated soil on Echinacea purpurea with four concentrations of crude oil - contaminated soil: control = 0, 0.5% ...

Effect of Electrokinetic on Bioremediation of Disulfide Oil Contaminated Soil

The removal of disulfide oil (DSO) from contaminated soil was studied by the bioremediation method and the influence of electrokinetic on the bioremediation process was investigated. The bacillus subtilis strain was used in the bioremediation process. The effects of humidity, time and DSO concentration in soil was studied. The experimental results for the bioremediation of DSO show, the removal...
